Getting to town

Distance to town: 1.5 mi / 2.4 km.

Your day in port

For a typical 8–10 hour call, many visitors combine a morning island or snorkel tour with an afternoon at a beach or downtown shopping. Those preferring a slower pace can choose either a full beach day or a relaxed half-day in Charlotte Amalie plus time browsing the shops near the pier.

Best time to visit

Peak season is December through April, when conditions are drier, slightly cooler, and seas are typically calmer. May and early June can also be pleasant with fewer crowds, while late August to October has higher hurricane risk.

  • Hurricane season runs June–November, with the highest storm risk usually from August–October.
  • Humidity is high year-round and midday sun is strong; heat can feel intense on walking tours and uphill routes.
  • Brief tropical showers can occur any time, so a light rain layer or umbrella is useful.

Shore experiences

  • Beach day at Magens Bay or Sapphire Beach with calm, swimmable waters and basic facilities.
  • Beginner-friendly snorkel trip by catamaran to Buck Island (USVI) or other sheltered reefs to spot turtles and colorful fish.
  • Skyline island tour with photo stops at Drake’s Seat and Mountain Top for easy sightseeing without much walking.
  • Shopping and an ice-cream or casual lunch stop in Havensight or downtown Charlotte Amalie.
  • Pirate- or history-themed walking tours (when available) in the old town for school-age children.

Food, drink and shopping

Local food and drink

  • Try local dishes like conch fritters, johnnycakes, fish tacos with Caribbean seasoning, and rotis.
  • Sample callaloo soup, stewed oxtail, and other island comfort foods at local eateries.
  • Enjoy fresh-caught seafood and grilled fish at harborfront restaurants or beach bars.
  • Sip Caribbean rum-based drinks such as painkillers, rum punch, and banana daiquiris (especially at Mountain Top).
  • Look for bakeries and small stands selling patties, pastries, and local sweets while exploring downtown.

Shopping

  • St. Thomas is a major duty-free shopping hub, especially for jewelry, watches, perfumes, liquor, and electronics in downtown Charlotte Amalie.
  • Havensight Mall and Crown Bay Center both have convenient duty-free shops and souvenir stores steps from the pier.
  • For more local flavor, browse craft markets and smaller boutiques for handmade jewelry, local art, spices, and island clothing.
  • Confirm U.S. customs allowances for alcohol and tobacco before purchasing, and keep receipts handy for reboarding and customs.
  • Many shops close by late afternoon and some smaller stores may have limited Sunday hours unless multiple ships are in port.

What to wear

Lightweight, breathable clothing, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes or sandals are ideal for the heat and hills, with swimwear and a cover-up for beach time. Pack reef-safe sunscreen and consider a light rain jacket, while respecting modest dress (cover shoulders and swimwear) when entering churches or government buildings.

Advisor notes

Clarify for clients which pier they will use (Havensight vs. Crown Bay) as this significantly affects transfer times and walking distances into town and to excursions. Emphasize the wide choice of excellent but overlapping tours—encourage clients to prioritize either beach, snorkeling, or panoramic sightseeing so they don’t over-schedule and spend too much time in transit on a short call.
