Getting to town

Distance to town: 1.5 mi / 2.4 km.

Your day in port

With 8–10 hours, most guests either focus on Cinque Terre (2–4 villages by train/ferry plus a short La Spezia stroll) or choose a full‑day excursion to Pisa or Florence. Clients who prefer a slower pace can combine a relaxed morning in La Spezia with an afternoon boat trip to Portovenere and back.

Best time to visit

April to early June and September to October are ideal, with warm, pleasant weather and lighter crowds in both La Spezia and Cinque Terre. July and August are hottest and busiest but best for swimming and full ferry schedules.

  • July–August can be very hot and humid, with crowded trains and trails in Cinque Terre.
  • Autumn (roughly October–November) can bring heavy rain that may close Cinque Terre hiking trails and disrupt ferries.
  • The broader Mediterranean hurricane/cyclone risk is low, but fall and winter storms can cause rough seas and port/ferry schedule changes.

Shore experiences

  • Take the ferry or train to Monterosso al Mare for a beach day with shallow water, gelato, and promenades suitable for strollers.
  • Ride the local train along Cinque Terre, hopping off for short village walks and photo stops rather than long hikes.
  • Explore La Spezia’s waterfront playgrounds and public gardens near Passeggiata Morin and the seafront.
  • Visit the Technical Naval Museum with ship models and maritime artifacts that appeal to kids and teens.
  • Join an organized coach tour to Pisa or Florence to simplify logistics and reduce walking for younger children.

Food, drink and shopping

Local food and drink

  • Local Ligurian pesto dishes such as trofie al pesto and focaccia al formaggio.
  • Fresh seafood including anchovies, mussels, and mixed fritto misto from trattorias in La Spezia and Cinque Terre.
  • Farinata (savory chickpea pancake) and various styles of Ligurian focaccia found in bakeries around the old town.
  • Local wines such as Cinque Terre DOC whites and Sciacchetrà dessert wine, often available by the glass or tasting flight.
  • Gelato and espresso from small gelaterie and bars along Via del Prione and in the Cinque Terre villages.

Shopping

  • Look for regional food products like pesto, olive oil, local wines (Cinque Terre DOC, Sciacchetrà), and artisanal pastas in specialty food shops.
  • Handmade ceramics, coastal‑themed crafts, and small artworks are popular souvenirs in both La Spezia and Portovenere.
  • Via del Prione and the surrounding streets host a mix of boutiques and chain stores for fashion, shoes, and accessories.
  • In Cinque Terre villages, shop for local limoncino (lemon liqueur), preserved anchovies, and small artisan goods, but expect higher tourist‑area prices.
  • Remind clients to check customs limits on alcohol and food before purchasing large quantities for transport home.

What to wear

Wear light, breathable layers, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes suitable for hills and uneven stone streets, especially if visiting Cinque Terre. Bring a light cover‑up for churches and a packable rain jacket in spring or fall; swimwear is appropriate for beach stops in season.

Advisor notes

Set expectations that La Spezia is primarily a gateway port and that advance planning is crucial to maximize time in Cinque Terre or Tuscany, especially around train schedules and potential trail or weather disruptions. Encourage clients to choose between an intensive Cinque Terre day and a Tuscany day trip rather than trying to do too much, and to book ship‑run or vetted independent excursions if they are anxious about DIY logistics.
