Getting to town

Distance to town: 3 mi / 4.8 km.

Your day in port

For an 8-10 hour call, clients usually do best choosing one main focus: either a half-day ruins excursion plus a short beach stop, or a full beach-club day with time left for the port village. Advise them not to overpack the schedule because transfer times, heat, and beach logistics can eat into the day.

Best time to visit

December through April is the sweet spot for Puerto Costa Maya, with the driest, most comfortable weather and generally calm seas. Late spring and summer can still be good for cruisers, but expect hotter, more humid conditions and a higher chance of rain.

  • Hurricane season runs June through November, with the greatest risk typically from August to October.
  • Expect very hot, humid weather much of the year; sun protection and hydration are essential.
  • Afternoon showers can occur in the wetter months, especially late summer and fall.

Shore experiences

  • Beach clubs with calm water and daybeds.
  • Port village pool and easy shopping/food options.
  • Dolphin encounters available in or near the cruise complex.
  • Short taxi rides to Mahahual for low-stress beach time.

Food, drink and shopping

Local food and drink

  • Fresh ceviche and grilled seafood in Mahahual.
  • Fish tacos and beachside Mexican snacks.
  • Cold Mexican beer and margaritas at beach clubs.
  • Regional Yucatán flavors such as cochinita pibil when available.
  • Try casual waterfront restaurants and bars along the Mahahual strip.

Shopping

  • Look for Mexican silver jewelry, vanilla, rum, tequila, and artisan souvenirs.
  • Mahahual and the port village both have small shops; quality and pricing vary, so compare before buying.
  • Cash can be useful for smaller vendors and beach clubs.
  • Avoid assuming all “local” crafts are handmade; check origin and craftsmanship.

What to wear

Light, breathable summer clothing, comfortable sandals or walking shoes, and strong sun protection are best. If visiting ruins or walking the beach road, choose shoes that handle heat, sand, and uneven surfaces; modest clothing is helpful for cultural excursions.

Advisor notes

Tell clients that Costa Maya is a port where the best experiences are usually outside the gate, but a perfectly good low-effort day is still possible inside the complex. For most guests, the winning formula is either a beach-club day in Mahahual or a ruins-and-beach combo, rather than trying to do everything.
