Getting to town
Distance to town: 20 mi / 32.2 km.
Your day in port
For an 8–10 hour day, many visitors combine a morning visit to Tuol Sleng and/or Choeung Ek with an afternoon exploring the Royal Palace, National Museum, and riverside, leaving time for a sunset river cruise or relaxed dinner before re-embarkation.
Best time to visit
November to March is ideal for river cruises into Phnom Penh, with drier weather, lower humidity, and more comfortable sightseeing temperatures.
- March–May can be very hot and humid, with daytime highs often exceeding 35°C (95°F).
- May–October is the rainy/monsoon season, bringing frequent downpours, higher river levels, and occasional localized flooding.
- Air quality can be hazy at times due to regional burning and traffic pollution, especially in the dry season.
Shore experiences
- Boat cruise on the Mekong and Tonlé Sap at sunset, offering gentle sightseeing with skyline views and a chance to spot local river life.
- Wat Phnom visit combined with nearby parks and ice-cream stops along Sisowath Quay.
- Central Market for a relatively organized introduction to local snacks, fresh juices, and souvenir browsing.
- Cambodia Living Arts performances (when available) showcasing traditional dance and music in an accessible format.
- Tuk-tuk city overview tour with short stops at photo-friendly landmarks like Independence Monument and the Royal Palace exterior.
Food, drink and shopping
Local food and drink
- Fish amok (coconut curry steamed in banana leaf), one of Cambodia’s signature dishes.
- Lok lak (stir-fried beef) served with rice, salad, and dipping sauce.
- Kuy teav (noodle soup) and bai sach chrouk (pork and rice) as classic local breakfast options.
- Fresh tropical fruits and sugarcane juice from market stalls.
- Cambodian craft beers and regional lagers in riverside bars.
- Social enterprise restaurants such as Friends the Restaurant and others that train disadvantaged youth (availability varies).
- Rooftop and riverside dining venues along Sisowath Quay offering both Khmer and international menus.
Shopping
- Central Market (Phsar Thmei) for jewelry, souvenirs, clothing, and local snacks in an iconic art deco building.
- Russian Market (Tuol Tompoung) for textiles, handicrafts, silks, and more eclectic, bargain-focused shopping.
- Koh Dach (Silk Island) excursions for locally produced silk scarves and fabrics purchased directly from weavers.
- Look for Cambodian pepper (often from Kampot), local coffee, and quality silk as worthwhile take-home items.
- Bargaining is expected in markets and some smaller shops, but fixed prices are more common in modern boutiques and malls.
What to wear
Light, breathable clothing, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes or sandals are recommended due to heat and humidity; carry a light rain jacket or umbrella in the wet season and dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees) for temple and memorial visits.
Advisor notes
Advise clients that Phnom Penh is both emotionally powerful and physically hot—pair heavier historical visits (Tuol Sleng, Choeung Ek) with lighter cultural or riverside experiences, and stress sun protection, hydration, and modest attire for religious and memorial sites. Pre-arranged guided tours can greatly streamline logistics and provide crucial context for Cambodia’s complex history.
